Why Use This skill:
A DBT skill that teaches clients emotions are changed through deliberate action — when emotion urges one behavior, opposite action prescribes the other to shift the emotional state.

Emotions don't just happen to us — they're shaped by what we do. When we act in line with an emotion, we feed it. When we act opposite to it, we change it.
This isn't about pretending. It's about recognizing that behavior and emotional state are in constant conversation — and clients have more influence over that conversation than they think.
Why this works
Emotions and behaviors are bidirectionally linked. Acting opposite to an urge interrupts the feedback loop that sustains and amplifies the feeling. The emotion cannot maintain its intensity without the behavior that feeds it.
